Broccoli's spot in the kitchen is irreplaceable, and how could it not be when it's so versatile, delicious, and nutritious? Unfortunately, with just how massive this veggie is, you can't help but have a bit of leftovers when preparing the dishes from time to time. Knowing how to store broccoli properly can come in great handy, especially when you don't want to waste food or make multiple runs to the grocery store. Read on for an easy, simple guide on how to keep it fresh so that any time your meal needs a bit of this earthy goodness, you can simply whip it out from the fridge.
What You Will Need
Here are some tools you will need. Don't worry, they're all just fundamental utensils that any average kitchen would have.
- Paper towels
- A glass jar
- Sealable ziplock bags
- Air-tight containers
How to Store Broccoli
It's important to make sure the broccoli is completely dry by dabbing it with a paper towel since the excess moisture might cause mold growth. Do not wash it until before cooking.
- Store Whole Broccoli In a Plastic Bag
Keep the broccoli head in a plastic bag, wrap it loosely, or poke holes in the bag so there's room for air circulation. Keep it for 3 - 5 days in the fridge's crisper drawer.
- Store Whole Broccoli In a Glass Jar
Fill up a glass jar up to about 3/4 with water. Then, simply put the broccoli in with the stem down and the head facing upward, similar to putting flowers in a vase. Put it in the refrigerator for up to one week. Don't forget to change the water daily.
- Store Cut Broccoli
Line a glass/food-storage container or mason jar with a paper towel to absorb moisture before filling it with the cut broccoli. Tightly close the container and keep it in the fridge for a few days.
These methods are suitable for storing broccoli short-term, approximately up to a week. If you wish to store it for even longer, we recommend freezing to maintain freshness. Check out our guide on how to freeze broccoli for more details!
How Long Does Broccoli Last in the Fridge
Properly stored, raw broccoli can last for up to 7-10 days in the refrigerator. However, the exact length of time may vary depending on several factors, including the freshness of the veggie when purchased, how it was stored before you brought it home, and the temperature and humidity levels in your refrigerator.
To help extend the shelf life of broccoli and keep it fresh for as long as possible, follow these tips:
- Store broccoli in the crisper drawer of your refrigerator.
- Don't wash the broccoli until you're ready to use it. Water can cause the broccoli to become mushy and spoil more quickly.
- Use the broccoli within a few days of purchase for the best flavor and texture.
If you notice any signs of spoilage, such as sliminess, discoloration, or an off-putting odor, discard the broccoli immediately to prevent foodborne illness.
