This Instant Pot green beans recipe turns the fresh green beans into a tender, smoky bacon-flavored side dish within 20 minutes.
Are Green Beans Good for You?
Yes, they are. Not only are they fresh, crunchy, and tasty, but green beans also provide essential nutrients and impressive health benefits.
- Good Source of Vitamins and Minerals: Green beans are a great source of vitamin C, 12.2 mg in one cup of raw beans, almost 25% of the daily recommended value. They also provide other essential minerals, especially manganese; a mineral that plays an important role in supporting your bone health, metabolism, and ability to heal wounds.
- Maintains Heart Health: One cup of raw green beans contains 2.7 g of fiber. The soluble fiber in beans helps lower LDL — or ‘bad cholesterol’ — and, therefore, total cholesterol levels.
- Supports Bone Health: There are 14.4 mg of vitamin K, 20% of the recommended daily intake, in one cup of green beans. Consuming an adequate amount of vitamin K has been proven to modify bone matrix protein and improve calcium absorption.
Can You Eat Green Beans Raw?
Generally yes, but in small amounts only. Green beans contain lectins — a protein that is resistant to the digestive system. As such, consuming them in large amounts can cause symptoms like nausea, diarrhea, and vomiting.
How to Season
Steamed green beans are a blank canvas that you can combine with any seasonings you like. Here are some of our favorite combos:
- Butter, salt, pepper, and lemon zest
- Olive oil, pepper, and parmesan cheese
- Olive oil, salt, crushed pepper flakes, and minced garlic
The easiest way to season green beans is to add all the ingredients and seasoning to a pan, sauteé, and let the excess liquid evaporate. This cooking technique ensures all the flavors stay in the same pan and are fully absorbed into the green beans.

Can I Use Frozen Green Beans?
Yes, you can use frozen green beans for this recipe. And you don’t even need to thaw them out.
You can toss them frozen and let the steam in the Instant Pot do the rest. The amount of time you steam the frozen green beans will determine their final texture.
Our advice is to check the green beans regularly to get a crispy or soft texture to your liking.
What to Eat With This Dish
