Orange Creamsicle — Your Best Dose of Vitamin C

Made with fragrant orange and rich yogurt and laden with dreamy goodness, this sweet-tart treat will give you a fantastically delicious summertime treat. No matter where you are—on your front porch, by the pool, or at your favorite holiday spot—this drink is the perfect thing to sip while sunbathing or sharing stories with  friends.

Not just the taste, we also love the fact that there are no tricky ingredients — just fruits, yogurt, milk, mints, and ice. You can leave out the ice for a thicker treat that’s freezer-friendly and can be made ahead. If you don’t have much time to spend in the kitchen, it’s indeed a must-try.

Orange Creamsicle — Your Best Dose of Vitamin C

Our Orange Creamsicle Smoothie Is a Healthy Treat, Too.

From oranges and Greek yogurt alone, you’ll get plenty of vitamin C and small amounts of minerals such as calcium and magnesium, among many others. Since we’ve added bananas to the recipe, it contains extra amounts of the above-mentioned nutrients along with some potassium, too. Getting plenty of micronutrients, after all, is what experts suggest for planning a healthy diet.

What also counts is being considerate of how much added sugar (not sugar from nutrient-dense foods) and calories you consume within the day. To help you take better control of your intakes, we’ve reduced the serving size, so that our drinks have a reasonable nutritional profile. This orange creamsicle smoothie recipe, in particular, has 139 calories, no added sugar, and is about 1 and a half cups in volume.

Our Orange Creamsicle Smoothie Is a Healthy Treat

What Our Smoothie Recipe Calls for

You’ll need orange juice, Greek yogurt for thickness, bananas for extra thickness and sweetness, milk to keep the blender running, mints for garnish, and ice.

Since we all have busy lives, we’re not against canned or bottled products, but we encourage you to read the back and answer these questions: How pure is it? Is it sweetened or artificially flavored? Although safe to consume, an orange-flavored drink doesn’t quite deliver the same nutrition that 100% orange juice does.

Greek yogurt, like any other yogurts, also contains casein, lactose, and whey, which can cause allergic reactions in some people. If you’re shopping for dairy-free milk products, you might as well look for plant-based alternatives to Greek yogurt.

If you’d prefer a thick and flavor-concentrated bowl of smoothie, skip the ice and freeze the components beforehand. This also makes the smoothie easier to store and reuse.

How We Made Our Orange Creamsicle Smoothie

Smoothies are the easiest things to make. We did nothing but add all to the blender and let the machine work its magic.

step 1: Run all through the juicer.

Run all through the juicer.

step 2: Pour into serving glasses.

step 3: Serve immediately.

Serve immediately.

If you want to go for the non-ice version, freeze the components before blending:

  • Slice the bananas, the thinner the better, and place the slices onto a lined baking tray. Slide it into the freezer for 1 hour.
  • Place the orange juice into a Ziploc bag, gently press it to remove the air, seal it tight, and lay it flat in the freezer for 1 hour.

Afterward, blend the components (without ice) and scoop the thick smoothie into serving bowls. This treat can be slowly enjoyed with a spoon.

Storage

Without ice, this smoothie can be kept in the freezer for up to 3 months, then blended again before serving. Place the servings into small Ziploc bags rather than in just one large bag to avoid dealing with a giant ball of frozen smoothie.
