This peanut butter oatmeal smoothie recipe takes your favorite breakfast ingredients to a whole new level.

Cooked oats and bananas are a phenomenal pairing. You’ll appreciate each spoonful more than the last, and it all comes with potent health benefits. With some peanut butter added to the mix, this breakfast bowl becomes the ultimate healthy treat that makes us drool with anticipation.

Not content to stop there, our team decided to get creative, adding chia seeds for extra nutrients and ice to adapt it for summer. It came out just as delicious as we imagined — thick, sweet, nutritious, and yet, super cool.

Is Peanut Butter Oatmeal Smoothie Healthy?

This smoothie boasts all of the myriad health benefits of bananas, oats, peanuts, and chia seeds in a single package.

For starters, these ingredients yield tons of micronutrients: vitamin E, potassium, calcium, iron, magnesium, and so on. Peanuts and chia seeds also provide us with protein and healthy fats — their omega 6 fats are known to be good for the brain and heart.

Since bananas are naturally sweet, we had no need for additional sweeteners. All 209 calories within each serving come from nutrient-dense ingredients.

Is Oatmeal Gluten-Free?

If you can’t consume gluten, you may want to reconsider oatmeal.

Although pure oats don’t contain gluten, oatmeal products sometimes share the same processing facilities with gluten-laden products. In some cases, the oats can get contaminated. If you’re truly allergic to gluten, you may want to steer clear unless the product proclaims itself gluten-free.

If you’re concerned about whether gluten-free and gluten-adjacent oats will taste different from one another, the answer is no. Gluten may make bread stretchy, but it won’t have any effect on the oatmeal’s flavor in such trace amounts.

Ingredients for This Smoothie

Our peanut butter oatmeal smoothie recipe calls for peanut butter, rolled oats, banana, chia seeds, milk, and ice:

  • Oats

Oats take on many forms and each varies in the preparation method. We used old-fashioned rolled oats (or oatmeal). If they’re not available, substitute in Scottish oats, quick oats, or instant oats.

We tried soaking the oats overnight and then using them in our smoothies. The texture turned out slightly thicker, but overall we don’t think it’s worth the effort.

  • Milk

If you’re someone who loves oats and often makes oat milk, you can use it instead of whole milk. Similarly, other styles of plant-based milk also work fine.

  • Peanut Butter

There are two things that set good peanut butter apart from the competition. Look for those that are unsalted and made with 99-100% peanuts. Mere peanut-flavored sauces/pastes not only taste different, but they often don’t give you the same benefits as pure peanuts.

ingredients
  • Banana

This recipe welcomes ripe bananas as well as overripe bananas. They may be too soft to hold and eat, but an overripe banana’s sugar content definitely makes the best sweet smoothie treat.

If you want to make your smoothie naturally thicker, consider using frozen bananas. Even if you don’t see frozen bananas at the store, just freeze your own at home.

  • Chia Seeds

Besides an impressive nutritional profile, chia seeds thicken your drink and are also fun to chew on. You can skip them, but they certainly make the smoothie more enjoyable.

How Long Does Oatmeal Last?

If they’re not cooked or mixed with any ingredients, rolled oats typically last up to one year. This oatmeal smoothie, however, has other, far more perishable ingredients. It should only be kept for 2 days in the fridge or up to 3 months in the freezer.

If you intend to store your smoothie, leave the ice out. Store whatever you have in containers or Ziploc bags, and when you want a glass, blend a portion of it with ice.
