This easy sour apple smoothie recipe is among our favorite healthy recipes at the moment as it is simple to make and tastes absolutely delicious.
Is Our Sour Apple Smoothie Healthy?
Yes, our sour apple smoothie is healthy. Here’s why:
Apples are abundant in fiber and water, two elements that contribute to their satiating nature. This means they could keep you feeling full longer and therefore, aid in weight management. Being rich in fiber, apples may also help to lower your cholesterol and reduce the risk of heart disease.
Additionally, apples contain vitamins B1 and B6 which are essential for growth and development and promote protein metabolism.
Ingredients You'll Need
Here are the ingredients for today’s sour apple smoothie recipe:
- Granny Smith apples: These green apples have a deep tartness that will contribute to the dominant flavor profile of the drink.
- Gala apples: This variety adds a layer of sweetness to the drink, along with subtle vanilla notes.
- Lemon juice: Contrasting the sweet-tart taste of the apples, lemon juice has a refreshing sourness that will bring another layer of flavor to the smoothie.
- Cucumber: It seems odd to add cucumber to an apple drink, but you’ll be pleasantly surprised by how its fresh taste lightens the overall flavors.
- Honey: Despite its name, you still need a touch of sweetness to mellow out the sour taste. This is where honey comes in to help.
- Spinach: Blending spinach leaves into the smoothie will give your drink a natural, vibrant green color. It’s also a great way to sneak veggies into your diet as well!
- Water: Adding water helps dilute the sharp sourness, making the smoothie more palatable to drink.
1. Can You Freeze Apples for Smoothies?
Yes, you can. Frozen apples are great for smoothies because they can thicken the smoothie’s texture and keep the drink frosty for a long time.
2. Do You Peel Apples for a Smoothie?
Apples have smooth and thin skin that is perfectly edible so technically you don’t need to peel apples to make a smoothie. That being said, apple skins are quite fibrous and will not blend completely into the smoothie.
If you don’t mind chewing while drinking your smoothie, you can just leave the skin on.
How Long Does This Smoothie Last?
If you don’t intend to drink this sour apple smoothie right away, be sure to transfer it to a container and put it in the fridge. It should stay good for two days.
We recommend storing the drink in an airtight container — preferably a bottle, or jar with a tight-fitting lid to minimize oxidation and delay spoilage.
You may see the smoothie separating but that is just the fiber and pulp of the fruits and veggies settling at the bottom of the container. This is totally normal with fresh fruit smoothies and safe to drink. You just need to give it a stir and it’s good to go.
