Today's peanut butter blueberry smoothie recipe is a simple guide to making a creamy, healthy smoothie in the comfort of your home kitchen. Even better, you can freeze this smoothie in popsicle molds to make sweet treats!
Is Peanut Butter Good in a Smoothie?
Yes! Absolutely yes!
Peanut butter is a magical ingredient that can be incorporated into almost any recipe, whether it is sweet or savory, a dessert or drink. With this smoothie in particular, the peanut butter’s salty sweetness makes an excellent addition. It highlights the berries’ sweet-tart taste while giving the overall drink an extra layer of nutty flavor.
Ingredients You Will Need
You will need the following ingredients for today’s peanut butter blueberry smoothie recipe:
- Bananas: You can use any variety of bananas for this recipe but be sure to use ripe ones.
- Berries: We're only using strawberries and blueberries today. However, if you have any other berries, such as raspberries or blackberries, you can add them to the blender as well.
- Peanut butter: Smooth peanut butter is the best option for this recipe as it makes the smoothie easier to drink with a straw. That being said, if you prefer to scoop and eat your smoothie with a spoon, feel free to use chunky peanut butter as it gives the drink an interesting texture.
- Peanuts: We garnished the drink with chopped toasted peanuts to enhance the flavor and texture of the smoothie.
- Milk: Whole milk plays an important role in this peanut butter blueberry smoothie recipe. It adds rich flavors and helps to thicken the texture.
- Ice: Ice is always an essential ingredient in making smoothies. It gives the beverage a cooling sensation, as well as the texture the signature frothy thickness.
What Is the Healthiest Liquid to Put In a Smoothie?
We wouldn't want to claim which liquids are the healthiest for smoothies, but here are some suggestions that fit today's peanut butter blueberry smoothie recipe:
- Almond milk: Almond milk is a relatively popular choice. It has the same consistency as milk but a fraction of the calories. What other advantages does almond milk possess? It is naturally lactose-free and cholesterol- and saturated fat-free, which means it is good for your heart.
- Coconut water: The term "nature's energy drink" is frequently used to describe coconut water. Why is it the case? For one thing, it's effective marketing on the part of the giant coconut corporations, but actual data also backs it up. Coconut water is an electrolyte- and potassium-rich beverage that is also high in fiber and salt.
- Plain, old water: It's self-evident that the only calorie-free, sugar-free, and cost-free liquid option for your smoothie is water. When it comes to weight loss smoothies, water should always be the first ingredient because it helps you burn calories and keep hydrated.
Is Peanut Butter Blueberry Smoothie Healthy?
Blueberries are a great fruit that can pair with almost any dessert or drink. But what we love about these berries is that they are low in calories yet packed with antioxidants. Blueberry antioxidants have been demonstrated to lower oxidative damage to "bad" LDL cholesterol, a major risk factor for heart disease.
Blueberries contain polyphenol antioxidants called flavonoids. A flavonoid called anthocyanins is considered to be responsible for many of these berries' health benefits, including potentially reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes.

How Long Does It Last?
Smoothies with fresh fruits usually last for up to two days in the refrigerator. We recommend storing the smoothie in an airtight container, bottle, or jar with a tight-fitting lid to prevent oxidation and extend the smoothie's life.
Allowing the smoothie to sit out on the counter at room temperature significantly shortens its shelf life to less than two hours.
