Now, let us look more closely at the ingredients list.
Ingredients You Will Need
1. For the Pasta
The most important ingredient is, of course, spaghetti.
You can follow the instructions on the package to boil your spaghetti. It will take you about 7 minutes to cook it.
You may notice that most of the recipes on the internet tell you to season your cooking water with a little bit of salt, so that the spaghetti would absorb it and have more flavor.
However, for this recipe, we would not recommend adding salt to the water when boiling the spaghetti, since this will increase the amount of sodium. However, you can add a pinch of salt if you find it’s necessary for enhancing the overall flavor of the dish.
Drain the spaghetti once you have finished, then transfer it to a bowl.
2. For the Sauce
- Ground beef
This is where the lean source of protein in our dish lies. A substantial amount of protein in a meal will boost your energy and make you feel full for longer.
Here we use fresh ground beef with only 15% fat for the best quality and taste. If you happen to have frozen ground beef in the fridge, feel free to use it.
- Tomato Sauce
It’s the luscious sauce that binds everything together in this dish. A coating of the delicious tomato sauce makes the spaghetti incredibly flavorful.
Though you can go for any of your favorite sauces, we recommend using our own homemade tomato sauce recipe. Canned or store-bought tomato sauce is convenient, but it cannot compare with freshly made tomato sauce. You can also keep track of all the ingredients and make adjustments to suit your taste buds.
- Vegetables
For the veggies, our Mexican spaghetti includes red bell peppers and corn kernels for a contrast in texture and color, and to give a fresh look to the whole dish.
- Seasonings
Olive oil, all-purpose flour, lime juice, and a mixture of garlic, onion, salt, chili powder, pepper, red pepper flakes, cumin, and paprika are all added for seasoning.
- Others
- Herbs: You just cannot ignore oregano when it comes to spaghetti! When cooked with spaghetti, oregano’s distinct taste and aroma complements the dish wonderfully well. Parsley and cilantro also enhance the flavor and color.
- Chicken broth: You will be amazed at how this special ingredient can make your spaghetti taste a lot better with that extra umami flavor from stewed chicken bones and veggies.
How to Store and Reheat the Leftovers
If you still have lots of spaghetti leftovers in the kitchen, but feel way too satiated after a hearty portion, then it’s time to put it in the fridge to eat later.
Transfer the leftover spaghetti into air-tight containers or Ziplock bags and put it in the fridge where it can stay fresh for up to 5 days. This dish can also be frozen and will last up to 2 months in the freezer.
If you want to make ahead for convenience, remember to separate the sauce and the spaghetti before you refrigerate them. This will make a huge difference when you reheat the dish. Our cooked spaghetti will not get mushy or sloppy because of the sauce.
Before reheating, you should let the spaghetti thaw overnight. Just place it in the microwave for 2 minutes and voila, hot Mexican spaghetti on the way!
What to Serve With
A nice Mexican-style side dish would make a great complement to Mexican Spaghetti.
That’s why we would recommend fresh Pico de Gallo salsa with it, and a refreshing glass of lemonade to lighten up the whole meal!
