Today’s tequila and grapefruit juice recipe features the tart and sweet taste of fresh fruits with a touch of alcohol to create a complex profile. It’s a flawless cocktail that’ll satisfy you to bits this National Tequila Day (July 24). Before jumping into the how-to section, let’s start with some common questions about this tasty cocktail.
Is Tequila and Grapefruit Juice Good for You?
This tequila and grapefruit juice cocktail, like cocktails in general, is not considered a healthy beverage since it contains alcohol. However, you can maintain your healthy diet by only drinking it in moderation.
USDA Dietary Guidelines suggest drinking less than 1.5 fl.oz of 80 proof alcohol a day, and our tequila and grapefruit juice recipe contains only 1 fl.oz for each serving. This amount of alcohol is enough to give it that cocktail flavor while still complying with the healthy guidelines.
Apart from alcohol, this drink contains grapefruit juice and pineapple juice. Pineapple is a great source of vitamin C and antioxidants. Grapefruit, meanwhile, is linked to impressive health benefits such as boosting your immune system and reducing the risk of diabetes.

Types of Grapefruit
Grapefruit is a type of citrus fruit that comes in various shades. These colors don’t refer to the skin of the fruit but the flesh inside. Let’s look in detail at some of the most common types of grapefruit in the market:
White Grapefruit: White or yellow grapefruit is the most traditional type and was used as the basis to breed new varieties like pink and red. The flesh is pale yellow, resulting in colorless juice. This type of grapefruit, which has a firm texture and a tart flavor, is widely grown for commercial uses.
Varieties include Ducan, Golden, Wheeney, Sweetie, Oroblanco, and Marsh.
Pink Grapefruit: This variety often appears pale to light orange to pink and is the favorite of many people for its balance of sweetness and tartness. The flesh is tender and juicy with light pink pulp, although the juice itself is colorless.
Varieties include Foster, Marsh Pink, Ray Ruby, and Redblush.
Ruby Grapefruit: Ruby or red grapefruit has a deep reddish flesh and juice due to the high levels of beta-carotene and lycopene in the fruit. Coming in at a smaller size than its white and pink counterparts, ruby’s sugars are more concentrated, so it has a sweeter flavor that overshadows the acidity.
Varieties include Rio Red, Flame, and Star Ruby.
Pummelo: Pummelo, also known as Chinese grapefruit, is one of the largest citrus fruits. Typically weighing 2 – 4 pounds, this bowling-ball-sized fruit often has a pale green or light yellow color. The rind on this variety is thicker than on others. Once ripened, the flesh offers a sweet taste and pleasant aroma, making this juicy fruit great for eating raw or making desserts.

How to Peel a Grapefruit
Peeling grapefruits might sound challenging at first. Not to worry! We came up with a simple method to peel the fruit in a matter of minutes.
Let’s start by cutting the two “poles” or top and bottom of the fruit just enough to expose the flesh. Then slice off the skin by using the knife to cut from the north to the south poles. The goal is to remove the skin without sacrificing too much of the edible flesh.
The pith — the white layer between the outer peel and the flesh — can be bitter. By peeling the fruit with a knife, you’ll get rid of this part and end up with only edible flesh ready to be used.

How Long Does It Last?
With alcohol and fresh fruit juice, this tequila and grapefruit juice won’t last longer than 24 hours at room temperature. We encourage you to drink the fresh juice within 2 hours of making it for the best quality and tasting experience.
To prolong the shelf life, you can keep the juice in an airtight container. This will help limit oxygen exposure which might lower the nutrient content of the drink. It also slows the development of bacteria which can eventually make the drink hazardous.
Place the drink in the refrigerator to keep it fresh for up to 3 days or throw it in the freezer for up to 2 months. When ready to use, simply thaw the juice in the refrigerator or at room temperature.
