Hot air and high heat in the summer can make us feel dehydrated. Avocado ice cream with its delicious coolness is a great way to get refreshed. Today’s recipe invites you to enjoy the richness of avocados, crunchiness of nuts, and garden-fresh scent of mint leaves, all in one delectable dish.

What Does Avocado Ice Cream Taste Like?

Avocado ice cream gets the bulk of its taste from ripe avocados and bananas. The natural, nutty flavor of avocados combined with the unique fragrance and sweetness of bananas has captured the heart of many ice-cream lovers.

Avocados blended with bananas create a soft and creamy texture.

Moreover, by using ripe bananas to add a natural sweetness, our avocado ice cream tastes less sugary and more delicate than store bought.

Is Avocado Ice Cream Healthy?

Yes, our avocado ice cream is a healthy and family-friendly recipe.

Avocados and bananas have long been considered the essential ingredients for a healthy diet. These two fruits are completely packed with natural goodness such as vitamins C, E, B6, K, magnesium, potassium, protein, and monounsaturated fats.

Each serving of our avocado ice cream recipe has 267 calories and is fully loaded with nutrients. This makes it a healthy dessert option or even a great way to kick off your morning.

  • Avocado

On average, 3.5 oz of avocado contains up to 485 mg of potassium.

Potassium is scientifically proven to be beneficial to the body’s blood circulation by helping to lower blood pressure. Consuming the daily recommended amount of potassium, may help reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases.

  • Banana

Bananas are a great source of fiber; 3.5 oz of banana can provide up to 1.7g of fiber.

According to one study, approximately 5% of America’s population meet the daily fiber consumption needs. Consuming enough fiber benefits both digestion and weight loss and helps you stay feeling fuller longer.

Another factor to take into consideration is the amount of additional sugar in this ice cream recipe. We reduced the amount to 2 tbsp per 4 servings, which is very reasonable.

Ingredients You’ll Need

  • Fruits: Avocado brings a slightly buttery taste along with a smooth consistency. By adding bananas, our dish can get the natural sweetness from the fruit itself, rather than tons of added sugar.
  • Pistachio nuts: If you want a little crunch, sprinkle some crushed pistachio nuts on top. When the ice cream melts, giving your palate a refreshing feeling, the nuts come in to mix things up with their crunchiness.
  • Chocolate: Chocolate, especially dark chocolate, goes well with avocado ice cream. It does not overpower the dish, yet creates an enjoyable bitter aftertaste. Moreover, dark chocolate can also benefit our health as it’s loaded with antioxidants.
  • Milk: In this recipe, we call for whole milk with 3.25% milkfat to make the ice cream extra rich and creamy.

For those lactose intolerant ice cream lovers, you can always substitute whole milk with nut milk. Despite the mild changes in flavor and consistency, the overall dish is still tasty and worth your while.

  • Lime: Adding 1 tablespoon of freshly-squeezed lime juice may sound strange, but by doing so the citric acid can help maintain the beautiful green color of the avocado. Once the ice cream is set, you can’t even taste the lime.
  • Sugar: Sugar is used to add sweetness to the avocado ice cream. However, you may adjust the amount of sugar depending on the ripeness of the bananas you use and your preferences.
  • Mint: Some fresh green mint leaves added on top of the ice cream, serve as a finishing touch to complete the dessert.

Can I Freeze Avocado for Ice Cream?

The answer is simple. Yes, you can.

Although frozen avocados may experience a change in texture and are not suitable to put on a salad, they are perfect for ice cream making.

Tips to Make Perfect This Recipe

Keep in mind that once avocados are exposed to the air, they start to quickly turn brown. To avoid this, make sure you put them in an airtight container and store it in the freezer right after you process them.

Another way to preserve the eye-catching green color of chopped avocados is to simply drizzle some lemon or lime juice on top of them.

One last tip for a flawless avocado ice cream scoop is to choose the most suitable type of avocado. We recommend using Hass avocados for this recipe to accomplish an extra rich and creamy taste.

How to Make Homemade Avocado Ice Cream

We would recommend you cut the avocados and bananas into small chunks when prepping to give the blender extra help. The blending process will seem all the more seamless for it.

Here’s a summary of how to make avocado ice cream at home:

Toppings for This Ice Cream

Besides pistachios and chocolate, there are many other variations out there to try.

If you like more chocolate, try adding extra chocolate chips.

If you want a more citrus taste to your ice cream, why not add some lemon zest or orange zest?

If you are craving some extra crunchiness, sprinkle some desiccated coconut on top.

The options are endless and it really is up to you and your creativity.

How Long Does Avocado Ice Cream Last?

Avocado ice cream will taste best when it is consumed immediately out of the freezer. Stored properly in an airtight container, the ice cream is going to hold its texture and incredible flavor very well for 7-10 days.

Although homemade ice cream is more difficult to store, it can last up to 3 months in the freezer. Just note that the ice cream will get progressively icier and might not taste as good as it does during the first week.
